SODAR and RASS Boundary Layer Research

SODAR and RASS for research purposes

SODAR instrument pages

Metek's SODAR / RASS systems have been used across the world in an industrial capacity as well as for scientific research. Below are just a few projects which invovled the Metek SODAR with links to websites and published papers.

Study: SODAR calibration for wind energy applications

Location: Denmark

SODARs (SOund Detection And Ranging) can be used as an alternative to met masts for wind energy applications and the following report is concerned with the calibration of SODARS for wind energy use.

Project:  "BBC2" intensive (cloud) measurement campaign

Location: Cabauw, the Netherlands

The objectives of the BBC2-campaign (BALTEX BRIDGE Campaign) are to gain a better understanding of cloud processes. The BBC2 campaign was jointly organised by the University of Bonn and KNMI.

A Metek SODAR/RASS system together with four Metek Micro Rain Radars were among the instruments used.

Project: VTMX (Vertical Transport and MiXing) program

Location: Field campaign in Salt Lake Valley, USA

VTMX is concerned with vertical transport and mixing in the boundary layer mainly around urban basins and valleys. Several groups participated in this campaign including NCAR who deployed a Metek SODAR.

Project: Turbulence and vertical transport in the lower Ekman-layer from SODAR measurements

Location: GermanyA Metek SODAR was used for nearly 2 years to study wind profiles, turbulence and dispersion conditions in the lower Ekman-layer.

Project: Validation Data for Small-scale Numerical and Physical Models of a City Quarter

Location: Germany

A Metek SODAR was used for long-term sodar measurements of a street canyon to get statistical data on the onflow conditions to the street canyon.
